Hawks Defeat “Nicks” for League Crown (OPPS—Officials Change Rules, Watkins Shares Crown)
For reasons that have not been fully explained to us, but it seems that there could have been something a bit odd, Eden Valley had a strange turn of events in baseball last week. The Hawks met St. Nicholas last Saturday, July 4th in a make up contest, which Eden Valley won 17-10. In that rather high scoring contest the hitting of Frank Hentges and Bob Wendroth aided the cause of the Hawks as Hentges banged out three hits in six trips to the plate and Bob Wendroth pounded out two homers, on two hits. This, according to the way the schedule was set up at the beginning of theseason should have given the Central Minny crown to Eden Valley. However, it didn’t and as we said it hasn’t been explained to the writer as yet. However, suddenly someone decided that Eden Valley had to face the Watkins Clippers again, the two teams had split during regular season play, and Eden Valley ended the regularly scheduled season with a record of one win better than the Clippers. But Sunday again the Hawks had to face the Clippers, only to be defeated by the Watkins men 15-2. Windy Wendroth again led his mates at the plate with two hits for two trips to the plate, Frank Hentges, H. Jensen, and Gordy Johnson each had one hit for the Hawks. We wonder what would have happened had Watkins ended the regular season in the lead. Tuesday Manager Buster Papesh received word from Central Minny League president Ewald Johannes, Watkins that the Hawks were supposed to face Watkins Thursday evening at Cold Spring under the lights to determine positions for the play-offs. This game was not to decide league championship as the league officials have decided that Watkins and Eden Valley now share the Central Minny Crown. Regardless of the outcome of the game Thursday night, Eden Valley will have a game here Sunday with Kingston or St. Nicholas.
