Luxemburg Avenges Loss; Hawks Eliminated Two weeks ago, the Eden Valley Hawks defeated the Luxemburg Brewers in a very one-sided affair by a score of 24-2. This past Sunday, the Brewers won the more important game, winning 5-4 and ending the Hawks promising season. The Hawks got on the board early, tallying a run on three hits in the first. Joe Thiel doubled to lead off the game and after an out, back to back singles by Jeff Haag and Mike Arnold scored Thiel. In the second, another leadoff double, this time by Chad Hesse, would lead to more runs. With Hesse on second, Darren Berg singled, advancing Hesse to third. One out later, Matthew Pennertz’s squeeze bunt scored Hesse and moved Berg into position to score on Haag’s double, pushing the score to 3-0. With neither team scoring in the third, Luxemburg got a fly ball to drop with the bases loaded and two outs, clearing the bases and tying the game. But the Hawks took the lead back in the bottom of the inning, when Mike Arnold doubled home Pennertz, who had walked earlier in the inning. Luxemburg wouldn’t go away, as they responded with a run on a two-out single in the top of the fifth. The top of the sixth saw the winning run come across when Luxemburg again got a two out hit to score a lone run, but it was all they would need as the Brewers held the Hawks off the board for the rest of the game, securing the victory. The Hawks finished the regular season with the second best record in the Central Valley League at 9-5. They were 15-8 overall. |
