Hawks Win Doubleheader Over Lux It isn’t a common occurrence, especially in town team baseball, but the Eden Valley Hawks played host to an evening doubleheader against the Luxemburg Brewers in Central Valley League action. With the innings shortened to allow time for both games (with the first one starting around 7pm after a short rain shower), the Hawks were victorious in both, winning 4-2 and 11-3. Dan Hansen took the mound for the Hawks in game one, and he pitched very well, hitting his spots and mixing his pitches, keeping the Lux batters off balance all night. He gave up two hits in only two of his seven innings pitched, and the Brewers took advantage in both of those innings, scoring their only runs in those innings. The Hawks, who were the visiting team for the first game, were behind after Lux took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. That lead didn’t last long as the Hawks tied the score in the top of the fifth on back-to-back-to-back singles by Dan Berg, Matthew Pennertz, and Joe Thiel. The Hawks took the lead in the sixth when Chuck Geislinger scored on Dan Berg’s sac fly. The Brewers tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but in the seventh, Chuck Geislinger doubled home Dan Hansen from second and Jeff Haag from first for the final runs of the game, giving the Hawks the 4-2 victory. The second game saw the Hawks start another left-handed pitcher named Dan. Dan Berg followed suit as he also pitched the full seven innings for the victory. After allowing two runs in the top of the first, Berg led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. After a passed ball, he scored on a single by Matthew Pennertz, who eventually scored to tie the game. Three walks, a single by Jeff Haag, and a wild pitch later, the Hawks had two more runs and a two run lead after just one inning. The Hawks would score at least one run in each of the next four innings, taking advantage of four Brewer errors in that time and scoring a total of seven more runs on five hits and six walks. The Brewers added a lone run in the sixth on three consecutive hits, but that was all they could muster as the Hawks won, 11-3. For the first week of June, the Hawks try to improve on their 8-2 record (5-2 in CVL) Wednesday in a home exhibition game against the Sartell Muskies, then attempt to win a rematch against the Pearl Lake Lakers, who defeated the Hawks 10-9 as one of the Hawks two losses and have since only won one game in league play. The Hawks would like to thank all the fans who have come out and supported them so far this season, and they hope to get more fans out this week and the rest of the season! |
