23 Runs Lead to Two Wins for Hawks

The Eden Valley Hawks had one of their best offensive weekends in recent history as they combined for twenty-two runs on twenty-nine hits over two games this past weekend, defeating the St. Nicholas Nicks and the Cold Spring Rockies in Central Valley League action.

The offense started this past Friday against the Nicks under the lights in Eden Valley.  The Hawks actually fell behind early, giving up one run in the first inning.  But the Hawks tied it up in the bottom of the inning, then exploded for four runs in the second inning, capped by Dan Hansen’s second homerun of the season, giving the Hawks a 5-1 lead.  St. Nick answered back with one of their own in the top of the third, but that was all they would get the rest of the game.  The Hawks weren’t done, however, as they added two runs in the fifth, then scored five in the seventh on five hits.  The Hawks then capped off the night with two runs in the eighth on three hits, including the fourth hit of the game for Heath Kramer and doubles by Al Faber and Joe Thiel. Faber also got the pitching victory, giving up only four hits and no runs over the final six innings.  When all was said and done, the Hawks were victorious by a score of 14-2.

On Sunday, the Hawks traveled to Cold Spring for a hot and humid game against the Rockies.  Heading into the game, the Rockies were undefeated in the CVL with a 5-0 record.  But the Hawks continued their hot hitting, scoring runs in each of the first five innings.  The scoring started in the top of the first with the Hawks notching one run in the inning.  But Cold Spring came back to put up two of their own to take the lead.  The Hawks tied the game with one in the second, then took the lead back with one in the third.  In the fourth, after his brother Darren had been hit by a pitch, Dan Berg homered off of the scoreboard in right field, driving in Darren.  But the Hawks weren’t done there, as they scored three more runs, driving the Rockies starting pitcher from the game.  In the fifth, with one out, Dan Berg again homered to right, giving the Hawks a 9-2 lead.  The Rockies would only add one more, in the sixth inning, after starting pitcher Matthew Pennertz settled down and held the Rockies to five hits over seven innings.  Dan Berg pitched two hitless innings to hold the score there, and the Hawks left Cold Spring with their second win in three days.

This upcoming week, the Hawks have only one day of games, but it is a double-header on Friday evening against the Luxemburg Brewers.  The first game will start at 6:30 pm, with the second game immediately afterward.
