Hawks Remain Perfect in CVL with Win Over Pearl Lake
Eden Valley kept their perfect record in Central Valley League play by defeating the Pearl Lake Lakers in a classic pitchers’ duel in Eden Valley. Matthew Pennertz recorded his third win on the year by going the distance for the first shutout of his Hawk career. The Hawks (3-0, 4-1) scored the only two runs of the game in the sixth inning when Nic Hansen got on base with a single with one out. Rob Ruhland then hit a double into the left-center field gap to score Hansen from first base. After a walk to Joby McCann and a strikeout, pinch-hitter Chuck Geislinger hit a ground ball to the shortstop, who then bobbled it. In an attempt to get an out, he overthrew the third baseman in an attempt to get Ruhland out at third. Ruhland scored on the throw, and the Hawks took the 2-0 lead. In the top of the seventh, Pearl Lake got two consecutive hits with two outs and had runners at first and third. With a 2-1 count, Pennertz faked a move to third base and threw to first, attempting to get the runner at first. The runner at third attempted to score on the throw, only to be thrown out by Gordy Pennertz to end the inning. M. Pennertz then retired the next six hitters in a row to preserve the win. The defense for Eden Valley was terrific, with the infield recording fourteen outs in the game. Joe Thiel had six ground balls himself, including a diving stop up the middle.
